![]() Although many believe that the 12 days of Christmas are the days leading to December 25 (that’s thanks to popular songs and movies that represent it that way), in Catholicism, the 12 days actually start on December 25 and last through January. The best evidence of good rooting is new leaf or stem growth. According to Catholic religion, you should hold off taking down your Christmas tree until January 7. The additional water will make the flocking stick. Then, starting at the top of the tree, start shaking powder out of the strainer with one hand, while misting the flocking that’s falling with the other hand. After the first year of growth, the tree will become established and only require watering during dry months or drought. Fill your large strainer no more than half full of flocking powder. Christmas trees require relatively low maintenance after the first year of growth. You want good rooting to occur before you repot the plant wait at least eight to ten weeks before repotting to a permanent home. Water the tree during the dry months or during a drought.After several weeks, the stems should have roots at least 1 or 2 inches long and are ready to plant in potting soil (see step 3). Set the cut end in 1 to 2 inches of filtered water, then place the jar in a window with indirect light. Optionally, you can root the stems in water before planting them in the soil.Let the soil dry out between waterings.Water the plant well. To create a humid environment and encourage rooting, cover the plants and container with a clear plastic bag secured with a rubber band. Remove the plastic bag once rooting has started.It should take two to three weeks for roots to form. Three stems fit nicely into a 4-inch pot five stems in a 6-inch pot. Push the cuttings about an inch deep in the lightly moistened soil.
